Along with all the excitement of finding out you're pregnant come a million questions. The Women's Pavilion and Resource Center offers you answers with a full schedule of classes that help prepare you for pregnancy, birth and parenting.
The Big Event (free adult tour)
As your due date approaches, you'll want to acquaint yourself with both the place and the particulars of your upcoming birth experience. This program includes a guided tour of our admitting area, labor and delivery, maternity unit and newborn nursery. You'll also learn from a question and answer session with our professional staff, as well as view a slide presentation discussing what to expect from admission to discharge.
These free tours are held on the 2nd and 4th Thursday of each month from 7 - 9 p.m. at the Tarzana Campus - Women's Pavilion lobby. No reservations are required.

We're Having a Baby (free sibling tour)
This class, designed for children ages 2-1/2 to 12 years old, prepares siblings to visit the new baby in the hospital, helps explain mom's absence and reinforces the importance of a big brother or sister's role in the family. Children learn the importance of hand washing before holding the baby, how to hold the infant—along with fun, safe ways to play with they're new brother or sister. The program also includes a hospital tour and age-appropriate video.
Attendance at this class is not mandatory, but is strongly encouraged if any sibling in this age range wishes to visit you and the baby in the hospital.
These free sessions are held on the 2nd and 4th Thursday of each month from 3:30 - 5 p.m. at the Tarzana Campus - Women's Pavilion lobby.
Childbirth Preparation
Prepare yourself physically and emotionally for the birth process with this five- week program. Certified childbirth educators will help you and your coach develop controlled breathing and relaxation techniques with practice sessions that emphasize your coach's role. You'll also learn about prenatal testing, danger signals prior to the onset of labor, how to recognize symptoms of labor, what to expect throughout labor and delivery, physical changes during recovery and the emotional demands of a new baby. To accommodate your scheduling needs, please call for reservations for this series by your fifth month of pregnancy.

Refresher Childbirth
Designed for the mother who has already experienced childbirth, this two-to-three week program covers the labor process in detail, along with the delivery and recovery phases. There's also an optional session on anesthesia and Cesarean section. Certified childbirth educators help you and your coach with controlled breathing and relaxation techniques and emphasize the coach's role in your childbirth.
Fee: $60 per couple

Anesthesia and Cesarean Section
Prepare yourself and your partner for the possibility of a surgical birth so you will be able to make this alternative a positive and family orientated experience. This class teaches you the possible indications for a Cesarean section, as well as the surgery and recovery process. You'll also explore the different types of anesthesia commonly used for the labor process, as well as vaginal and Cesarean deliveries. This class is part of the Childbirth Preparation series, but is open to any parent interested solely in this topic.

Baby Care
Are you ready to meet the physical day-to-day needs of your baby? Our professional staff will teach you the best ways to hold, bathe and diaper your newborn, as well as how to take your baby's temperature and care for the umbilical cord. Discussions will also cover the normal appearances of the newborn, breast and bottle feeding, coping with a crying baby and how to know when to call your doctor. We also include time for hands-on practice.

The Amazing Newborn
Your new baby will bring you lots of surprises—and in this class, a pediatrician will tell you what to expect from day one, beginning with the procedures following delivery and the newborn transition period. A developmental therapist will discuss normal infant growth and development, and help you understand your baby's cues. You'll also learn innovative techniques to enhance your baby's learning environment, games to play, soothing a cranky baby and infant massage.

Breastfeeding
Whether you have decided on breastfeeding or you're still exploring the option, this class can help. Our lactation educator teaches infant nutrition and successful breastfeeding techniques. You'll also learn the advantages of breastfeeding, difficulties and common problems, anatomy and physiology, how to pump and store breast milk, feeding guidelines and proper positioning so your first breastfeeding interaction with your baby can be a positive one! Partners are strongly urged to attend.

Mom's Guide to Dads
This two-part program begins with a discussion with expectant dads about their excitement, fears, questions and concerns about fatherhood. In addition, dads will learn skills and tips to help them become more involved in the care taking responsibilities of their new family. In a separate session, mothers will be given insight and guidance on how to encourage, help and support their partner's new role as a hands-on father.

Parents Expecting Multiples
Having multiples is a phenomenon that dramatically changes lives. In this informative program, expectant parents will learn about preparing for the new arrivals as well as causes of stress, survival suggestions, the psychology of parenting multiples, preparing older siblings and identifying resources.
Fee: $20 per couple
Infant Safety and CPR /Infant and Child Safety and CPR
The Infant Safety and CPR class is designed for parents with newborns to one year of age. "Babyproofing" you home, CPR and obstructed airway (choking) management techniques are taught.
Fee: $35 per person
The Infant and Child Safety and CPR class is designed for parents who have children from newborn to eight years of age. This course offers a thorough discussion of "childproofing" your home, including safety measures for the pool, car, and other areas. CPR and obstructed airway (choking) management are included.

Transition to Parenthood
Led by a licensed therapist, this glaces focuses on addressing the myths and risk factors for postpartum, what to expect with your baby during the first year, and how your relationship as a couple will change.

Baby Signs Basics (Baby Sign Language)
Babies have so much to say, but without words, communication can be frustrating. This class will teach parents simple hand gestures to show their infants that allow babies and toddlers to communicate what they see, need and even how they feel. Baby Signs® helps babies to speak sooner and jumpstarts their intellectual development. This program includes a class for expectant parents, as well as a continuing program for children up to 24 months of age.
